Question 93
Dear Doctor N.,
My friend has been told she should have an hysterectomy for cervical cancer. She says she is of the opinion that this will ruin her sex life as she will no longer be able to orgasm after the surgery, and, therefore, is reluctant to go through with it. Is this true?
REPLY:
I have not found that to be the case in my patient population. Almost every woman who has a hysterectomy, including removal of the cervix who receives individualized, optimal HRT is capable of a fulfilling sex life, including orgasm. This assumes that she was capable of this prior to surgery. This concept arises because many women who experience these problems following a hysterectomy are not provided with the appropriate therapy and needlessly suffer a diminished libido and sexual response.
