Question 55
Dr N,
I had a complete abdominal hysterectomy just a bit more than two months ago. I haven't had bouts of diarrhea in years, but now two weeks in row have experienced bouts that have lasted a couple of hours. I've read abdominal surgery can sometimes cause diarrhea and I'm wondering if you've heard of this. I've made no changes in my diet, medications or lifestyle.
Thank you for any help you can offer.

I am sorry that you are having this problem.
Yes, I have seen patients who have had this problem following a hysterectomy, some for a short time and other for an extended period. I don't know the cause, other than bowel irritability induced by the surgery. However, there are a few strategies you might employ for the present. I would avoid all foods containing cabbage, onions and garlic for a while and see if this makes a difference. Avoid milk products to see if you have become lactose intolerant. If this doesn't work, you could try 1, or 2 Immodium, the over the counter diarrhea medication, a day and see if this is able to relieve the problem. I have had some patients who have done this with good success, but you will need to discuss this with your doctor.
Let me know what and how you do.
